Methods to improve filtration

The filtration is the last step in the production of beer which determines the quality of the final product. Therefore, it is very important to carry out investigations into filtration performance in regard to quality and quantity. Problems during filtration will cause high costs, because of laboratory and material costs combined with the very expensive filter recharge, the costs for beer losses or even the interruption of supply to the packaging department. These filtration problems can occur with a rapid increase of the pressure difference at the filter inlet and the filter outlet or the increasing trubidity of the filtered beer. In order to avoid these effects many authors did have described the influence on beer filtration of such factors as the use of different raw materials with their specific chemical composition, the different technological aspects or the use of different enzymes to improve the filterability of a beer. This script will give an overview of the most influencing factors on filtration performance.
