Our ur ur großvater has drunken Helles - Riedenburger Ur-Helles
Sometimes breweries from outside Bavaria try to produce beers originated in Baveria. Many times breweries from other than the origin of the style having difficulties to produce other beer types than local (depends on the brewers experience) or the common ones. Some years ago I got a call from a brewery trying to produce a Dunkles. They used a Baverian dark malt which formed golf to tennis ball like compounds during the fermentation. The brewer didn't know that the malt needed a protein rest at 45° C in order to break down compound forming proteins. You might imagine where the 20 hl of "Dunkles" went.
Helles is a type of beer original brewed in Bavaria. It's brewed like an Munich Export style (German link) beer but is a class of its own. It differs from Pilsen style because it is lower in bitterness. The prefix "Ur" [GER] refers to ancestral and means the original type of the style, the one that was brewed a very long time ago. Might be interesting to taste a beer that our forefathers have drunk.
What was good for our forefathers should be good for us as well that's why I gave it a try. There is plenty of sweetness in it, combined with a fine hop note. It goes down easy and could be drunk with a good Brotzeit, pasta or risotto. Due to its sweetness I couldn't drink more than one.
At the end it's not what I expect from a Helles but therefore it is called Ur-Helles and that one is an ok one.
The beer was poured from a bottle.
