Let's go into the cellar and taste some beers - Nokian Kellari

Keisari Kellari

When I was an apprentice at the Brauhaus Wallerstein I worked mainly at the fermentation or storage facility. I remember that one guy who every Friday made his way from his department to our storage facility carrying a bucket with him. He then used the commonly known "Zwickelschlüssel" to open one of the ready for filtration tanks and poured some beer directly into the glass which he had hidden inside the bucket. When I once asked him why he is carrying a bucket he told me that when he got caught on his way he could at least tell that he needs something from the filtration department (which was right beside the storage), which was beer of course, but he wouldn't tell that and would instead just point at his bucket.

I poured the beer from the can into a glass and checked for the color first. I'm not sure if this is really 47 EBC, looks more like 37, but that's ok with me. You could clearly see that it is unfiltrated. Foam is stable brown but coarse.

It comes with a mild hoppy note combined with some sweetness. The taste underlines the smell. It has a light sweet taste combined with a mild hop bitterness. The bitterness stays till the end and even longer. It is a little bit too overcarbonated. More than I would have expted from a Kellar. It also lacks the deepness of body that usually comes from an unfiltrated Kellar.

It isn't the best Nokian beer I have tasted so far. It definitely won't impress the beer enthusiast but would be a nice alternative for someone fed up with the standard ones.
