Kukko IPA - Laitilan Wirvoitusjuomatehdas

The bottle doesn't make the beer - Kukko IPA

Kukko IPA

I don't know why companies are still pushing into the IPA market. This market is done and gone. It peaked some time ago and is now on a steady decline. Who wants to drink a overhopped bitter beer anyway? Guys above 50 that can't smell and taste anything else than bitterness?

But, my 50 cents about IPAs doesn't interfere with my professionalism on writing a review.

The bottle itself looked really nicely designed. That actually was the reason why I bought it. Kukko beers normally come in cans and I thought that the bottled IPA will be something outstanding. With all that advanced expectation I opened the bottle and poured it into a glass and let it sit for some time. Serving temperature for Ales is above 10°C. So taking it right out of the fridge and tasting it would make no sense at all. In the glass it looked really nice, shine brown golden color. I noticed the nice hoppy and citric fruity aroma which I liked very much, and I couldn't detect any off-flavours. The first nip is pretty bitter, as expected, but then nothing else kicks in. It stays till the end and beyond and even adds some harshness. For that much hops, this beer lacks body.

On their bottle they have a taste profile. Basically that what we at Lautering.net generate for you at every review. According to their taste profile the beer should be:

  • malty: 6 of 10
  • hoppy:  8 of 10
  • bodied: 5 of 10
  • fruity: 7 of 10
  • sweet: 5 of 10
  • bitterness: 8 of 10

I don't agree with it. From my perspective body is 3 to 4, like the sweetness.

BUT: we have to remember one thing: This beer is gluten free.
